According to reports reaching the Sierra Leone Daily Mail, there has been a delay of hundreds of passengers travelling with Kenya Airways in Sierra Leone as well as neighbouring Liberia owing to bad weather condition.
Hazy weather conditions, is said to have severely hampered visibility levels within the past few days, and the airlines are having to put up with increasing cost of accommodating stranded passengers.
According to Robert Kiproto, Kenya Airways Country Manager for both Sierra Leone and Liberia, “The difference is safety standard and we can’t afford to take a risk just to satisfy our passengers”. He said that Kenya Airways is not the only affected airline but that they give the safety of their passengers an utmost importance, and that the airline cannot afford to take any chance during weather conditions like the ones they are presently faced with.
Currently, about 150 passengers from different nationalities are stranded at the Lungi Airport, of whom 73 were said to be headed for Nairobi. In a similar development at the Roberts International Airports in Monrovia, about 140 passengers are also stranded and facing the same travelling quagmire.
Sierra Leone’s Lungi Airport is in the outskirts of the capital, and given the difficulty in travelling through the estuary that links it to the mainland; many passengers are forced to stay at the airport in such situation. As a result, the problems of lodging, feeding and other issues become worrisome.
